HAZARDOUS MATERIALS
Hazardous materials are substances that are either flammable or combustible, explosive, toxic, noxious, corrosive, oxidizable, an irritant or radioactive.A hazardous material spill or release can pose a risk to life, health or property. An incident can result in the evacuation of a few people, a section of a facility or an entire neighborhood.In addition to on-site hazards, you should be aware of the potential for an off-site incident affecting your operations. You should also be aware of hazardous materials used in facility processes and in the construction of the physical plant.
HAZARDOUS CHEMICAL SPILL
1. If a chemical has spilled or leaked in your department and you are unable to properly clean it up yourself, notify your department manager immediately. Functional employees will be called in to help clean up the spill.
2. In the event of an accidental release of hazardous chemicals, an evacuation would be required if the release is in a significant amount to cause, or have potential to cause, harm to employees.
3. After it is determined that there is a hazardous chemical emergency, the department manager will be notified and make the decision whether to evacuate any areas. All unqualified employees should remain clear of any spill or release of any hazardous material.
4. If evacuation procedures must be initiated, contact the Safety Director or acting director to have an evacuation announcement made.
5. NO EMPLOYEE MAY ENTER THE RELEASE/SPILL SITE OR AFFECTED AREAS WITHOUT PROPER PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT AND MANAGEMENT PERMISSION.
6. Only those employees who have been properly trained in Hazardous Chemical Spill Cleanup will be permitted into an affected area. |
