OSHA requires that our company establish a system of evacuations to follow for different emergency circumstances. The following listing represents company policy for various emergency situations:
· Fire
· Explosion
· Hazardous chemical spill
· Power failure
· Earthquake after the shaking has stopped
· Shelter in Place Every work area supervisor has the responsibility and authority for implementing the actions described in the following paragraphs:
Local Area Evacuation In an emergency of limited scope (such as a small fire or chemical spill), the Department Manager should order the evacuation of directly-affected employees. The evacuation and the emergency must then be reported by contacting the Safety Director.
Total Building Evacuation In the event of a major emergency which could result in severe danger to employees or property, the Safety Director will instruct the Office Manager to make an evacuation announcement. A description of the nature and extent of the emergency, its location and where to evacuate to will also be announced.
EVACUATION
On announcement of a building evacuation, the following steps must be followed by work area supervisors:
· Employees should be instructed to move out of the building by designated routes at a steady, orderly pace. Designated routes are identified on evacuation maps posted on the building walls.
· Employees should be instructed NOT TO un-garb, loiter in hallways, clock out or stop to gather personal belongings.
· Employees should be directed to regroup with their Department Manager at the Safe Refuge Area for head count.
· As Department Managers and Supervisors evacuate, they must check remote areas and restrooms to ensure that all employees have evacuated the building. Managers are responsible for knowing the location of their employees.
Additional instructions will be given to all affected employees.
LIAISON WITH RESPONSE PERSONNEL AND CIVIL AUTHORITIES
· After completion of a work area evacuation, the Safety Director must remain as close as possible (without personal danger) to the evacuated area to provide information to emergency response personnel on the nature and scope of the emergency.
· Communications with civil authorities such as firefighters, paramedics or police should be made by the Safety Director.
"ALL CLEAR" ANNOUNCEMENT
On resolution of the emergency situation, employees will be advised by an all clear announcement with specific instructions to return to work. |
